Antioxidants can be a single or a combination of vitamins and minerals the body uses to stay healthy. Their main function is to seek out and neutralize free radicals. To create many of the compounds our bodies need to properly maintain our metabolism, stable atoms are chemically bonded to form molecules by sharing electrons in joined outer orbits.1

Once these bonds (called covalent bonds) are formed, the new structure will either gain or shed electrons to reach the optimal number to gain stability.If these bonds become weak and break a free radical may be formed if too many electrons are lost. Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electrons to regain stability. Generally, they will then attack the nearest stable molecule by stealing some of its electrons. When the attacked molecule loses electrons, it becomes a free radical and a chain-reaction may begin. If enough free radicals are formed, it can disrupt the cell’s function leading to health problems.
